“Night, Jackson,” Aria whispered sleepily. “It’s nearly Christmas.”

Jackson sighed and laid his chin on his paws. He wasn’t supposed to sleep on Aria’s bed, though sometimes he did sneak up in the middle of the night. He loved being tucked in next to her now, but it was different. He didn’t like things to be different. Why was everything suddenly so strange?

“Aria!”

Aria wriggled out of her duvet, gazing sleepily back at her mum. Jackson yawned next to her and then licked her cheek. “Hey, Mum…” she murmured. “Oh! Happy Christmas!”

“What are you doing down here?” Mum asked. She was still in her dressing gown and she looked bewildered rather than cross.

“Jackson was crying. I could hear him from upstairs, Mum, and it wasn’t fair that he was shut down here on his own.” Aria stood up, wrapping her duvet around her shoulders. “I didn’t look at the stockings, I promise.”

Her mum kissed the top of her head. “Oh well. Happy Christmas! I came down to make tea for everyone. I heard James and Matthew waking up and I was sure they’d want to be down here opening presents soon.”

Aria nodded eagerly, thinking of the stockings piled on the armchair by the fireplace and the mound of presents under the Christmas tree.

“Why don’t you go and get dressed? I’ll feed Jackson and get breakfast ready. You can tell Lucy and Hannah it’s time for presents.”

Aria hurried back upstairs. Hannah and Lucy were still asleep, but they woke up when she whispered, “It’s Christmas! Come on, let’s get dressed. Mum’s putting some croissants in the oven and we can do presents in a minute!” She grabbed her Christmas jumper, which had a dog in a Santa hat on it, and went to say Happy Christmas to her dad.
